Brooke Friendly

Brooke Friendly has been folk and country dancing for over 30 years. She was a founding member of The Heather and the Rose Country Dancers (H&R), a statewide organization promoting English and Scottish Country Dance with several branches throughout Oregon whose teachers use global terminology for calling dances. She served as H&R's treasurer and secretary for seven years. She recently finished six years on the Country Dance and Song Society Board of Directors.

Brooke has been leading a weekly English and Scottish Country Dance in Ashland Oregon since 1982. She also teaches dance classes for all ages through the Southern Oregon University (SOU) community education program and at local K-12 schools as well as an academic credit class at SOU. In 2006, she and her husband Chris Sackett published Impropriety, their first volume of country dances. She coordinates the Ashland branch's annual spring ball that will celebrate its 28th anniversary in 2008.

As part of her commitment to teaching, Brooke has attended several workshops for teachers/leaders including a series of three weekend intensives led by Bruce Hamilton in 1998-99 and Gene Murrow's Music for English Dance Leaders at Early Music Week 2000. She has also organized two teacher's workshops - one for H&R teachers and one of Bruce's intensives. She has attended many dance camps including CDSS English week at Pinewoods, English and Scottish week at Pinewoods, BACDS English week at Mendocino and Fort Worden Scottish weekends.

In addition to teaching and organizing country dance, Brooke has been in several performing groups presenting English, Scottish, Irish and Garland dance and was on a Morris dance team for eight years. She choreographed the Southern Oregon University Department of Theatre Arts Productions of Entertaining Strangers and Dancing at Lughnasa and Oregon Cabaret Theatre's production of Parcel from America. She does rapper and long sword at dance camps, goes to the local monthly contra dances, and plays the recorder in the privacy of her own home. She also loves to sing, especially rounds.

Brooke works for Southern Oregon University Extended Campus Programs managing arts and adult community education programs. She was arts education coordinator and executive director for the Arts Council of Southern Oregon, a regional arts service agency, for more than eight years. Her other loves are gardening, hiking, cross-country skiing and birdwatching.

"Brooke brings an unusual number of strong qualities to her country dance teaching. These include: her passion for dancing; her strong sense of the dance, choreography, movement style and phrasing (she is a beautiful dancer); her friendly (she is well-named) yet commanding personality; her ability to convey directions concisely and clearly; and her creativity and her sense of humor and whimsy. To add to that, she has a strong sense of what makes for a good community, a crucial quality for country dance leaders. She makes the learning experience fun and relaxing."
Jacqueline Schwab, country dance teacher and musician, member of the band Bare Necessities

"Adore Brooke's insight and approach." - camper at BACDS English Dance Week
