Chuck Ryer
teaches The Heather and the Rose Country Dancers Eugene and Corvallis
classes. He has been teaching English and Scottish country dance
since 1981. He has also studied the folk dances of Ireland and
Wales, and includes these styles in his classes.
In 1988 Chuck
received the teaching certificate from the Royal Scottish Country
Dance Society. In addition, he has studied country dance teaching
with Bruce Hamilton, Ron Wallace, June Shore and Frances Gray.
Chuck has presented workshops in Portland, Seattle and Victoria.
He is a member of TAC,
the international association for teachers of Scottish Country
Dance.
Chuck loves
all the national styles of country dance. Although they have a
common origin, each nationality has given its own individual stamp
to its dances, yet complement nicely. Only through learning all
styles can the student of country dance learn to appreciate the
full spectrum of tempo, rhythm and emotion evoked by country dances.
He has
written several dances.

I started
learning English and Scottish Country dancing in 1981. I made
my first attempt at teaching at a teachers' workshop with Jacqueline
Schwab in 1993. My first real classes were in Roseburg, when I
substituted for Alixe Dancer occasionally. Now I co-teach The
Heather and the Rose Country Dancers classes in Corvallis and
Eugene on a regular basis.
In my teaching
I attempt to share the sense of community and the joy of dancing
that the Heather and the Rose has given me. I hope to help people
become beautiful dancers, teaching them how to dance, as well
as teaching them dances.
Mostly I dance
at Heather and Rose events around Oregon but I've also danced
in Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; and around England, with American
tourists as well as at folk festivals and in community gatherings
with the natives. I love that dancing has given me friends all
over the world, people I may not see often but with whom I share
a bond that transcends differences in age, background, political
opinion, and everything else.
I learn something
about teaching from every class I teach and every class I take.

I've danced
since I was five, starting out at barn dances in Littleton, Colorado.
I remember dancing to "Oh, Johnny, Oh", "The Jessie Polka Square"
and "The Wheel". In Junior High, I would go to square dance classes,
but never told any of my friends for fear of being labeled "square".
I moved to Southern Oregon in 1970; I started going to Country
dance classes at Rogue Community College in the late 70's, and
fell in love with it. In 1995 I moved to another community, and
decided I needed to teach country dancing if my new friends were
going to dance with me, so, with help from musicians Kent Fisher
and Jonny Kline we've been holding classes ever since.
