Getting Started With HotSync

HotSync is the process of synchronizing information between your Palm handheld and your desktop computer. A HotSync operation does many things:

  • Keeps your Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Memos, and third-party data current and in sync between your handheld and your PC or Mac
  • Installs new applications on your handheld
  • Transfers photos, music and other media to your handheld
  • Saves your settings and preferences. In the case of smartphones, this includes call history, speed dials and favorites.

This information is backed up on your desktop computer when you synchronize. If you erase all your handheld data (such as when you hard reset), you can sync to restore information from your PC or Mac.

Troubleshooting: Microsoft Outlook Sync

If you synchronize with Microsoft Outlook, you may be using either Palm Outlook conduits Chapura's PocketMirror, depending on your device (here's how to tell). Palm Outlook Conduits are included with Tungsten T3 and later handhelds; earlier handhelds included PocketMirror. When you run the CD-ROM that came with your device, the Outlook synchronization conduits are installed and activated.

Troubleshooting: Network HotSync

With Network HotSync (Windows only), you can synchronize your handheld with any computer on your company's network. Whether you are on different floors of the same building or on the other side of the world, once you log into your company's network you can sync as if you were at your desk.
