Local Home Decor Report

February 7, 2024

As owners consider home improvement projects in 2024, our recent Home Decor Report gave them the design direction they were looking for. The report revealed that a neutral palette rules as more people are moving away from bright colors, and many are prioritizing bathrooms and kitchens for remodeling.

Now we’ve taken the report a step further to see which Opendoor markets, from San Diego to Jacksonville, are ahead of the game in implementing these design trends on the ground.

Cool Blues and Greens

Our report found that subdued greens and blues offer the inviting tones many owners desire. While bright color trends had a big moment in 2023, pink is now overwhelmingly called out as the #1 least appealing color for kitchens (34%), bedrooms (30%), bathrooms (30%), and front doors (28%).

The rise in popularity of blues and greens, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, shows a growing desire for a calming, nature-inspired look. Similar to 2024 Colors of the Year predictions for paint brands, these colors create a sense of tranquility and freshness.

From coast to coast, kitchens in Opendoor homes in San Diego, Jacksonville, and Charlotte are embracing the universal appeal and timeless charm of a blue or green palette. Whether it’s a modern, coastal, traditional, or farmhouse-style kitchen, these flexible colors adapt to different aesthetics to add a touch of vibrant style.

San Diego: The base cabinets use Sherwin Williams' Tradewind and the upper cabinets use Pure White.

Jacksonville: The base cabinets in this kitchen use Sherwin Williams' Meditative and the upper cabinets use Alabaster.

Charlotte: The upper cabinets and base cabinets in this kitchen both use Sherwin Williams' Pewter Green.

Striking the right color balance will enhance your space. If you’re working with blue and green tones, create a balanced look by:

  • Using complementary neutral elements, like white or gray tiles and countertops, which highlight the pop of color

  • For flooring, consider light to mid-tone hardwood or light tiles to extend a bright atmosphere

  • Add depth with natural elements, like wood or stone accents, and varied textures

  • Implement metal finishes, such as matte black or brushed brass, to add sophistication

Crisp and Clean Bathrooms

The trend of crisp and neutral bathrooms is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Our report showed that an updated bathroom was the most appealing design feature (61%) for home shoppers. As for colors, crisp white was the most preferred bathroom hue (35%), followed by gray (27%) and beige/tan (12%).

With a neutral backdrop, there is opportunity to incorporate different design elements, from traditional to modern. Elevate your space without major expense by swapping out fixtures, like faucets or cabinet hardware, or adding a fresh coat of paint. Some 60% of survey respondents chose fresh paint as the top way to freshen up home decor.

These bathrooms in Opendoor homes in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Tampa provide a refreshing neutral backdrop, but are accented with metal and bold finishes, creating a look that is versatile and easy for future homeowners to make their own.

Revamping your bedroom, kitchen, or bathroom on a budget can be a breeze by focusing on cost-effective changes for a fresh look.

  • In the bedroom: Consider updating bedding, adding throw pillows, or rearranging furniture.

  • In the kitchen and bathroom: Paint cabinets or replace hardware.

  • Throughout the home: Switch out wall hangings or rearrange art. Add area rugs and plants to bring the room to life.

These sorts of small, thoughtful changes can yield a big impact without straining your budget.

If you’re looking to sell your home and move into a fresh space, head to Opendoor.com to get started.
