This is part 2 of our 4 part #LoveWhereYouLive series. We’ve dedicated this Valentine’s season to a place close to our hearts: the home.
It’s Valentine’s season, and that means it’s the perfect time to show your home some love. When it comes to celebrating the most romantic time of the year, your first instinct probably isn’t exactly to break out the rubber gloves and deep clean the house. But think about it this way: taking care of your home is actually just a way of showing yourself a little love.
We often forget the impact our surroundings have on our happiness and day-to-day life. Think about how retailers use color to influence shopping habits, and how diners in dim restaurants tend to order more food. It’s difficult to look at our homes objectively, but they play a major role in our well-being.
Try out a few of these simple tips to improve your living space and you’ll be feeling the love in no time:
1. Straighten up around the house.
Even if you don’t enjoy it, cleaning and decluttering your home can be downright therapeutic. Whether you realize it or not, those messes in your home are adding to your stress. That dog fur that’s been collecting in the corner of your living room is also occupying space in your brain.
Spending just five minutes a day cleaning can really add up. You could make a game out of it. Set a goal to sell or give away one unused item in your house every month. Break down your cleaning goals one room at a time. Create a sorting method (keep, give away, storage) and go to town. Whatever you do, just know that the even the smallest effort to clear up any junk and make your house shine can go a long way in improving your outlook.
2. Tackle a few low-cost updates.
Not every home upgrade has to break the bank. There are tons of upgrades that the average person can make at low cost and often with very little effort.
For example, you could create cubbies within a bookcase, install a new doorbell, add a doormat, paint your kitchen cabinets, replace your cabinet handles, switch out your outlet plates, add crown molding to your walls, paint your front door, grow some grass, scrape those popcorn ceilings, add floating shelves to your bathroom, upgrade your light fixtures, or add mirrors around the house. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Check out any of these guides to find some cheap updates that will make a big impact on your home.
Adding small updates like these is a surefire way to make you fall in love with your home all over again, and one day these updates could even impress a prospective buyer. Who knows, you may find that you’re more handy around the house than you expected.
3. Dress up your home for the Valentine’s season.
Another idea is to go all in with the Valentine’s decorations. Spruce up your home with vases, fresh flowers, splashes of color, and indoor string lights or put up a small chalkboard and fill it with love notes for your significant other. Decorating your home can really help you slow down and appreciate the present.
Plus, your decorations don’t only have to be holiday-themed. Why not buy your home something nice for the month of love and appreciation? That could be a piece of furniture you’ve been eyeing, a work of art that’s caught your interest, or a rug that ties the room together. You could consider replacing your current paint with more neutral colors, or even go bold and add an accent wall. There’s really no shortage of options to improve the aesthetic of your home, especially when you’re inspired by the holidays.
4. See your home in a new light.
Proper lighting can make a huge difference in your home’s aesthetic. The best approach is to divide your home’s lighting into several layers. For the first layer, you’ll want to make sure that each room has the proper amount of ambient light, the functional light that helps you get around. Typically, you can get the ambient light you need using overhead lighting and fixtures, like recessed lights or bulbs from ceiling fans.
Once you have the basic layer of lighting covered, it’s a great idea to add what’s referred to as “task lighting.” Task lighting is lighting that’s useful for accomplishing specific tasks. (Think desk lamps, floor lamps, and vanity bulbs.)
When you add task lighting to your home, be sure to consider the height of the light source. For instance, you probably don’t want a floor lamp towering over you as you curl up in your comfy chair to read.
The last layer to consider when lighting your home is accent lighting. Accent lighting can include anything from a light that illuminates your favorite piece of art, to an elegant chandelier that hangs above your dining room table.
Great accent lighting will enhance the features of your home instead of taking over the room. For more useful tips on how to properly light each room in your home, take a look at this guide.
5. Make some memories at home.
Admittedly, this one’s a little more about you than the home, but it’s important. When was the last time you had guests over? When was the last time you cooked for your significant other? Or hosted a birthday party? Don’t wait for these types of moments to come along. Seize them! Commit to that long overdue ladies night! Heck, you could even host a romantic evening at home celebrating this Valentine’s season.
One day you’re going to look back fondly on those memories. You’ll remember how your friend Dave accidentally knocked over the entire glass tray of lasagna that you slaved over for hours, or how little Jamie cried when she didn’t get the bicycle she wanted for her birthday. Take some time to slow down and enjoy the place that’s become a central part of your life.
Showing your home a little love can brighten up your life in all sorts of ways. While you’re celebrating all the love in your life this month, don’t forget to appreciate that beautiful place you call home.
