Located less than 15 miles northeast of San Antonio is the town of Converse. Founded in 1877, Converse is a growing, intimate, and connected town that’s proud of its “family-oriented” designation. 

The designation isn’t by chance. Converse’s Economic Development Corporation and community outreach have helped the town prosper. Community organizations like Converse Youth Sports League, 4-H, and GRASP support the growth and development of all community members, while community events like Night in Ole Converse and The Second Saturday Art Festival provide opportunities for resident engagement. Tax abatements, Chapter 380 agreement opportunities, and EDC local incentives support small- and medium-sized ventures established by Converse entrepreneurs.

Converse is a burgeoning town with potential that residents are recognizing. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Converse's population grew from 18,198 in 2010 to 27,466 in 2020. This growth doesn’t deteriorate Converse’s small town feel, though. A new resident told San Antonio news outlet WOAI, "We all, you know, wave to each other. You get to know each other and our neighbors. It's pretty quiet, too."

1. Converse is senior-friendly

For individuals and families looking for a forever home, Converse may be the right place. Converse has amenities and programs to support senior residents. In August 2021, the Converse Senior Center opened. The center provides continental breakfast, hot meals at noon, and group activities Monday to Friday. Transportation services are available weekdays through Greater Randolph Area Services Program, Inc. (GRASP) by appointment for shopping and medical appointments. GRASP fare starts at $5 and goes up to $25 depending on the distance.

2. Community assistance programs are available

Hard times fall at the most unsuspecting times. Bexar County supports residents through those times with safety net programs. The utility assistance program Residential Energy Assistance Partnership (REAP) is available to Bexar County residents who reside outside San Antonio city limits and are CPS Energy customers. 

3. Gather the brush on your property for removal

The Converse Ground Division maintains vegetation in public areas, mowing and trimming city right of ways and spraying vegetation for weeds. While the team primarily operates to maintain public areas, the team also supports private homeowners with brush and mulch services. The division picks up brush during the second week of every month free of charge. Pickup times are on a zone calendar, but homeowners can pay a fee to have brush removed from their property out of schedule.

1. Mark your calendar for Night in Ole Converse

Night in Ole Converse (NIOC)is an annual event hosted by the Converse Lion's Club and held at Converse City Park. Community members and organizations can take part in the community parade, which kicks off the fair. The two-day event also has food vendors, arts and crafts sales, a car show, a barbeque cookoff, and live bands.

2. Meet neighbors at the National Night Out

Meet your neighbors at National Night Out (NNO). NNO is an annual nationwide event to garner awareness for community safety programs as well as highlight crime and drug prevention. The community-wide block party includes a cookout, live music, and kid-friendly activities.

3. Volunteer at Converse Public Library

There’s no better way to meet the community than become an active member of a local organization. Volunteering at Converse Public Library is one such locale where residents can meet and give back to their neighbors. Volunteers perform a variety of tasks, from shelving books to greeting guests and hosting library events like storytime and LEGO club. An application, background check, and willingness to jump in headfirst are all you need to volunteer at Converse Public Library.

Take advantage of Converse’s outdoor amenities when the Texas weather permits. Converse City Park is an outdoor escape, with cycling and walking trails, a variety of ball fields, a playground, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a butterfly garden.
