Many small towns have a friendly charm that attracts visitors and home buyers alike. But what makes a small town great? If you look at the Best Small Towns rankings by US News & World Report, you’ll likely notice a few common themes: stunning natural surroundings, a wealth of outdoor activities, plus world-class entertainment. Here are the top small towns of 2022–23.

1. Bar Harbor, ME

Bar Harbor has a storybook charm, with gorgeous views, adorable shops, and beloved restaurants featuring locally caught lobster. This small Maine town is also known as the gateway to Acadia National Park, offering countless possibilities for outdoor enthusiasts. Lovers of marine life will enjoy whale and seal watching in Bar Harbor and lobstering off the coast.

2. Telluride, CO

Telluride is a historic gold rush town that’s now a world-famous ski destination, boasting more than 2,000 acres of powder for enthusiasts of all levels. If you’re looking for a good time, this town is also known for its rowdy bar scene and variety of festivals. Yet even with so much going on, Telluride still maintains its small town feel, with just 2,500 full-time residents.

3. Jackson Hole, WY

For outdoor lovers, it’s hard to imagine a better spot than Jackson Hole. Located next to Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, this small Wyoming town also features a top-rated ski resort, the National Elk Refuge, and Granite Hot Springs. If that’s not enough, Jackson Hole is a thriving center for the arts, and residents can enjoy many annual festivals plus a robust restaurant scene

4. Lake Tahoe, CA

With clear blue waters and a backdrop of majestic mountains, Lake Tahoe is a paradise for anyone who loves to hike, bike, kayak, golf, swim, or ski. And there’s plenty here for those who prefer indoor entertainment, too. That’s because Lake Tahoe is situated on the Nevada-California state line, with the Nevada side offering multiple casinos, plus a variety of dining and shopping.

5. Sedona, AZ

Sedona’s red rocks are so iconic, they’ve been the backdrop for multiple feature films, including the smash 1988 hit Midnight Run. These days, Sedona attracts legions of hikers and new age types, who come to the area for its beauty, ample trail system, and abundance of natural spas. It doesn’t hurt being a 100-mile drive from the Grand Canyon, either.
